The Holder speech on race

Unfortunately the headlines are all about the provocative phrase “a nation of cowards” in the new Attorney General’s address to Justice Department employees marking Black History Month.  If you haven’t heard it, Eric Holder, the new Attorney General, simply said that black history is American history and ought to be taught as such, not given “separate and unequal” [...]

This is taking things a bit too far

Hilarious. (Hat tip Marc Lamont Hill.)

Gauntlet

That’s Big East basketball this year.  DeJuan Blair goes for a 20-20 and dominates 7′3″, 270-pound Hasheem Thabeet as #4 Pitt bounces #1 U-Conn.   I don’t follow the college game like I used to, but I’ve got memories of 1985-1986, when heavy Final Four participation seemed inevitable with Patrick Ewing and Chris Mullin the league headliners.

Once insane, now sane

Stumbled across the video below this morning after hearing earlier this week about ex-Ku Klux Klansman Elwin Wilson’s apology to Congressman John Lewis for the beating Lewis suffered in Montgomery, Alabama in 1961.
The interviewee is Johnny Lee Clary, a former Klan leader turned preacher, and he’s talking about the late Reverend Walter Watts.

Birthdays

This is a nod to all those people who seem to have little interest in my modest efforts here but who love, love, love to stay up on all things Sarah Palin.  Whose 45th birthday is today.  That’s her in the photo above, signalling that the field goal is good.  Is it my imagination, or [...]

Remember when “Bank on it” meant something?

Citizens South Bank in Gastonia, North Carolina is offering 3.5 percent teaser rates for home mortgages.  And it’s not a ripoff — after two years the rates rise to 5.5 percent, fixed, which is about as good as you’d get today.  The only condition is that the home be offered by a builder or developer [...]

The war on pot

I have never tried marijuana.  Never interested me.  Never been heavy into alcohol either.  A control thing.
Back in the day I was a resident assistant patrolling the dorm with the admonition that weed smoke ought not be wafting through hallways.  Just enforcing policy.
Hmmm. The Super Bowl Most Valuable Player, the most decorated Summer [...]

The money question

At least three nominees for high posts in the Obama Administration are under fire for tax issues.  One has made it through, one has resigned, and a third is working his connections in hopes of saving his nomination.
The last is Tom Daschle, the former Democratic Senate leader, who parlayed decades of elected office into several sweet [...]
