I am praying for the people of New Orleans

Hurricane Gustav is already nasty, and it’s heading square for The Big Easy.  It’s too soon to crack on how it’s almost exactly three years after Katrina and the Republican National Convention is starting up at the same time due north.

They call Alabama the Crimson Tide

Woke from a nap and the television is playing the last five minutes of a Michigan loss at the Big House for the second straight year.  For some reason the announcers sound like they’re calling spring practice.  They’re barely more awake than I am.
Utah 25, Michigan 23.  Football is here already?  Damn.
ABC runs a promo [...]

Age and the presidency

It’s cool for people to wonder about Barack Obama’s experience based purely on age.  I don’t agree with that line of thinking, but I don’t have a problem on its face.  Same goes for years in office — that’s not the only type of experience there is, but that’s a reasonable place to start.
And John McCain’s [...]

“I was just your average hockey mom in Alaska.”

OK.  Now I’ve seen the video.
Talking ’bout Sarah Palin’s acceptance of John McCain’s invitation to join his ticket.
I predict she won’t last two weeks.
I mean it.
John McCain is going to have to find another running mate.
Sarah Palin and her family are going to go home to the great state of Alaska [...]

Sarah Palin’s kids have cool names

That’s about all I can say unequivocally about her.  (That, and she’s the cutest female governor I’ve seen lately.)  She seems nice enough.  I’ve got no problem with her.
But damn straight, this smacks of some Harriet Miers shee-it.  The McCain camp not only didn’t bother to make a choice that would be good for the country, [...]

Rachel Maddow looks on in shock

… As Pat Buchanan effusively praises Barack Obama’s address accepting the Democratic presidential nomination.
Keith Olbermann:  “There you have it.  We had to stop Pat Buchanan gushing over Obama’s speech for the sake of time.  Perhaps that will tell you the story better than anything else we can say.”

Great speech, Hillary Clinton

Didn’t know she had it in her.  I haven’t been so concerned about the Democratic Party coalescing around Barack Obama, or more specifically about Clinton’s play to have her delegates counted.  But her standing up for Obama is huge for atmospherics, which affects media coverage.  And some of her loyal supporters [...]

Personhood

From Cobb this gem on checking one’s self:
“I grew into a bad habit though, now that I think of it. It took most of my life to get out of it. It was the arrogant habit of expecting to be misunderstood and discounting everyone else’s opinion.”

Making the case against immigrants

Per se Shuffle

I used that phrase a few posts ago and it occurred to me that I needed to go way back to when I first saw it overused.  (In my experience, if you say it more than once in a week you’re using it too much.  So I’m in trouble.)
Some gems from this piece on Willie Gault (#83 above), [...]
